Decree XIX – Master Michael

It can be said that the most talented, gifted and exceptional among us can find themselves lonely so far above the mediocre. Such isolation can inevitably lead them to a state of mania where they attempt to reach beyond their power – to bring us into their vision. When brought low by ill fame, suspicion, rejection and the inevitable hardships of time, our failing to accept their alieness, they may overcompensate in seeking a world better than any of us can imagine being real, or ever hope to visualize.

This is the case of Michael Jackson – singer, writer, artist, King of Pop Music. The pain of the difference between the world he could create in his music and that we all dwell in was too painful, and likely led him into abuse of shallow chemical relief.

May the beauty he gave the world forever remain the impression we hold of him, more so than the idiosyncrasies of a pained spirit. May he continue to inspire us to a better world of our own making.

Decree XVIII – Playin’ Catch Up

You regular readers may have noticed the absense of articles on their scheduled days.

I’m sorry for this gap in ribald writing, which is caused by adjusting to a new job, sleep schedule and work on da Dominion Revamp. The re-design, re-focused and re-imagined site has already sucked Hunin (remember the fat guy on Dominion Cast?) into the matrix and I’m fighting for it not to absorb your Dominus.

Expect articles for TV Tuesday and Wildcard Wednesday this weekend. Thanks for you patience.

Star Wars Saga: A Thematic Retrospective

Recently I’ve introduced a friend to the epic wonder of the Star Wars story. What kind of friend of mine – Dominus Digg, Dark Lord of the Geek – would not be intimately familiar with the classic trilogy nor the … pretty prequels?

A chick! (mock surpise)

While re-watching the six-part story for the umpteenth time, I considered which have the best story. Which communicate themes that explain why the series has resonated so broadly over thirty plus years.  “Awesomeness” is not a good criterion because its subjective and unclear. A few of the prequels had awesome CG effects but also equally awesomely stupid writing. Judging them on special effects and action has been done to death and is like judging a woman only on boob size.

Decree XVII – Kung Fu Carradine

Thai authorities found veteran action actor David Carradine apparently hung in his Bangkok hotel room last night. Despite the circumstantial evidence, we at da Dominion do NOT accept this explanation.

Sifu Carradine himself once had this to say about his life’s work:

It’s always seemed to me like a mission. A holy one, like the Blues Brothers. It’s a marathon. You can’t quit; even coming in dead last has honor. Quitting doesn’t. Look, I had absolute faith in my future when I was starving in New York and no one believed in me besides me and my girlfriend. I’d be stupid to lose that faith after I’ve become a fucking icon. Oh, yes. And I love the work.”

Regardless of whatever happened, we respect Carradine for the man that he was as well as the legends he portrayed.

We showcase for you gents that read some looks to get your summer going with pizzazz (Puh-ZASS, not pizza) and along with a translation of what these styles convey so you nerds don’t come off corny as da Dominion representatives you are.
