Confident Community

Community is a new sitcom in NBC’s Thursday night line-up that isn’t a The Office clone. Can it be funny despite this?

Yeah.

It can be and IS funny.

For one thing it’s very self  referential. It knows it’s comedy pedigree and talks about it. This is The Breakfast Club, Meatballs and other misfit story premises that give us laughs with feel good morals. They’re all a bunch of  flawed people with intrinsic value that makes the characters human. Like a college version of MASH – or The Simpsons for younger viewers.

Plus, it’s extremely blatant in telling what kind of show it’ll be. It took a few episodes of The Office to get into it but Community lays out it’s humor in the first three minutes. How? Punchy ballsy writing: writing that punches you in the balls (or stomach for women or leg for spiders).

Alot of comedies rely on actor  improv but this one is very well writen. Its not so much what the characters do but the clever and fitting things they say. Still, there is some good acting in it:  Daily Show’s John Oliver. The main guy that looks like Ryan Seacrest. The old guy from Saturday Night Live.

THE FUCKIN’ OLD GUY FROM SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE!?!?!

Bill Mur … no, Chevy Chase. I got confused cause the lead character Jeff is just like a Bill Murray character, has a manipulative too cool for school attitude.

The show told me so.

Watch it.
