A big plus of coming of age is that Hollywood can draw you in to see new flicks based on your childhood favorites. The downfall is having your initial hopes dashed as they completely “reimagine” the story, effectively murdering fond memories.
The Will Ferrell/John C. Reilly comedy has a good pedigree. Written by Adam McKay and Ferrell whom collaborated on Anchorman and Talladega Nights, two very funny flicks, its a funny but … unusual movie.
I’m not of the generation that got enamored with Harry Potter – nor do I have a vagina – so I’m not a fan of Rowling’s series. Coming of age “drama” with a touch a fantasy whimsy, cliche dread and teen angst in the more recent ones aren’t a big attractant to a player of D&D and reader of true fictional classics like Dune, Lord of the Rings and the Jedi Academy series by Kevin J Anderson.
